Details

The Luce Scholarship provides funding for graduating seniors, graduate students, and young professionals who have had limited exposure to Asia or Asian studies. The scholarship provides Luce Scholars with the opportunity to gain new perspectives and cultural insights in host countries through immersive living and working experiences in Asia. The scholarship provides a living stipend and provides an immersion experience in Asia for an outstanding group of young Americans who would not otherwise have the opportunity to come to know Asia intimately. Placements can be made in the following countries or regions: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Annual Number of Scholarships Awarded

  • 15-18 per year



Eligibility

  • Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident
  • Be a graduating senior, recent graduate, or young professional
  • Be 32 or younger OR if older than 32, candidates must have received their bachelor's degree within the past 3 years
  • Candidates who have spent a significant amount of time (18 weeks or more since beginning college) in more than one of the countries where we place Luce Scholars are not eligible to apply for the Luce
  • Candidates who have spent 18 weeks or more (since beginning college) in only one of the countries where we place Luce Scholars are eligible to apply but will not be placed in the country where they have spent significant time



Selection Criteria

The intent of the program is to provide an in-depth experience in Asia to young Americans who would not otherwise have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the country where they are placed

University Endorsement Process

University endorsement is not needed for this scholarship. However, the University of Utah may only have 3 Luce applicants from our institution per year.

April 25, 2023: Luce Application Opens

October 16, 2023 by 3 pm MST: National Deadline

Mid-November: Semi-finalists virtual interviews

 

Early December: Notification of finalists

January 18-24, 2024: Finalist Weekend in San Diego, CA

 

Early February: Notification of selection
