The Luce Scholars Program is a competitive leadership development fellowship that provides emerging leaders with immersive professional experiences in Asia. The Luce Scholars Program aims to strengthen relationships across borders by offering scholars opportunities to deepen their understanding of Asia’s countries, cultures, and people. Through this yearlong immersion, the Luce Scholars Program equips scholars with knowledge and skills to address global leadership challenges and build a more interconnected world.

Placements include: Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Timor Leste.

Annual Number of Scholarships Awarded

  • 15-18 per year



Eligibility

  • Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident
  • Be a graduating senior, recent graduate, or young professional
  • Be 32 or younger OR if older than 32, applicants must have received their bachelor's degree within the past 3 years
  • Applicants who have spent 18 weeks or more (since beginning college) in more than one of the countries where Luce Scholars are placed are not eligible to apply
  • Applicants who have spent 18 weeks or more (since beginning college) in only one of the countries where we place Luce Scholars may still apply, but they will not be placed in the country where they have spent significant time



Selection Criteria

The intent of the program is to provide an in-depth experience in Asia to young Americans who would not otherwise have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the country where they are placed

University Endorsement Process

University endorsement is not needed for this scholarship. However, the University of Utah may only have 3 Luce applicants from our institution per year.

April: Luce Application Opens

September 15, 2025 by 3 pm MST: National Deadline

Mid-November: Semi-finalists virtual interviews

Early December: Notification of finalists

Mid-January: Finalist Weekend in San Diego, CA

Early February: Notification of selection
