Details

The Gilman Scholarship supports U.S. students with financial need to study abroad or complete internships abroad. The scholarship includes up to $5,000 to cover tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, international airfare, passport and visa fees. Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000.




Scholarship Amount

$5,000-$8,000, depending on program


Annual Number of Scholarships Awarded

  • ~3,600 per year



Eligibility

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be an undergraduate student in good standing
  • Receive a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that you will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of your study abroad program or internship
  • Be in the process of applying to, or accepted for a study abroad or internship program of at least 3 weeks
  • Be applying for a credit-bearing study abroad program in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System.

  • Community impact abroad and upon your return home
  • Diversity of background and experiences
  • For Critical Need Language Award applicants only:
    • Commitment to proficiency in a critical need language
